The Executive Council of the Kurdistan National Council (KNK) released a statement regarding the extraordinary meeting they held on December 12 to discuss the situation in South Kurdistan (Bashur) where protests against the economic crisis continue.
The statement pointed to the growing protests across South Kurdistan, saying; “The failure to resolve the problems existing for years has carried the situation in Bashur to an alarming level.
Highlighting the public discontentedness and anger spilling out in the streets, KNK said; “To our regret, the latest incidents have witnessed violence and undesired methods. Some citizens were injured and others lost their life.”
Extending their condolences for the slain citizens, KNK called for the release of all those arrested during the demonstrations.
“We support the demonstrators’ legitimate demands to attain the right to subsistence, service, freedom, a contemporary and honorable life. We hope that these fundamental rights could be achieved in a democratic and peaceful way.”
KNK pointed out that it is proven by experience that a nonobservance and brutal repression of people’s demands would never provide a solution to problems. The Congress emphasised that only peace and dialogue could pave the way for a solution.
Calling upon the government of South Kurdistan to develop a peaceful and democratic resolution, KNK added; “We also ask the security forces to stop using arms against demonstrators.”
