A statement was made at the Maxmur Camp to mark the 17th anniversary of the uprising that started during a chaotic football match on 12 March 2004 in Qamishlo city of Northern and Eastern Syria and resulted in an attack of the Baath regime against Kurds killing 52 people.

Teacher Neşat Kara, who read out the statement said; "17 years have passed since the Qamishli uprising. The Kurds from Rojava, just like the Kurds in other parts of Kurdistan, have always resorted to various uprisings and resistances for their legitimate rights and identity. We can name the incident that took place in Qamishli as the uprising of the Kurdish people. Bashar al-Assad carried out genocide against the Qamishlo people just like Saddam Hussein did in Halabja, Kenan Evren in Amed prisons and Ruhollah Khomeini in Rojhilat (Iranian Kurdistan) against the Kurdish people".

Kara continued: “We revere all the martyrs of the Rojava Revolution and the freedom struggle in the person of the martyrs of the Qamishli uprising. Today, thanks to the resistance of the people in Rojava Kurdistan and the heroism of the youth, thousands of kilometers of holy Kurdistan land has been liberated from its enemies. As the people of Maxmur, we once again commemorate the martyrs of Qamishlo, condemn the dark forces behind the massacre, and salute the free system of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, which was established thanks to the martyrs.”
