Mosque in Sur left in ruins by the attacks of state forces

Photos emerged showing the Hacı Hamit Mosque, the bombardment of which had been recorded on camera during the state's attacks on Sur, left in ruins as result of the attacks.

Destruction continues in Amed's central Sur district, which has been home to human civilization over the past 7 thousand years, during the 'curfew' and siege that began on December 2, 2015 and is still in place. Six neighborhoods within the protected urban area have been razed to the ground during the massive destruction. Thousands of houses, workplaces, historical sites and worship places have been destroyed during the bombardment and artillery shelling of the district for 100 days.

One of such buildings is the Hacı Hamit Mosque. The mosque, the bombardment of which had been recorded on camera during the times of attacks, was heavily damaged after the aggression of special operations forces deployed in Hotel Class (Green Park) which they used as headquarters. Special operations forces were positioned at the top floor of the hotel and heavily shelled the mosque and nearby houses located on Köprülü Street in Savaş Neighborhood of Sur.

The mosque, which has become a ruin after the shelling, carries the scars of all-out attacks. Recently emerged photos show that both the minaret and the surrounding historical structures at the mosque have been destroyed and only the dome and the walls with thousands of bullet holes remain. Graffiti of “PÖH”, short for Special Operations Police in Turkish, grabs attention on a column on the front side of the mosque that was rendered totally unserviceable.
