Police detain three people protesting demolition in Diyarbakir

Reaction grows against the demolition in Sur: Police fired shots in the air and detained 3 people

As Ayşe Dün’s house was demolished by the police and demolition units with her belongings still inside in Sur, the police intervened with people protesting the demolition. The police fired shots in the air and detained three people.

The demolition in Alipaşa and Lalebey neighborhoods in Diyarbakır’s Sur district continues against all protests and people are forced out of their homes. The Alipaşa House of Mourning was demolished yesterday under supervision by the municipal guards and Kutlu Street has been under a police blockade since early morning today. Armored vehicles, TOMA water cannons and riot police units held the street entrances and demolition units arrived.

The house of Ayşe Dün, a resident of Kutlu Street, was demolished by force. Dün protested the demolition, but the police and demolition units tore the house down without even letting her remove her belongings. Homeowner Ayşe Dün and her son Sadık Dün objected to the demolition, and the police attacked the mother and son with their batons and forced them out of the building. When neighborhood residents protested, the police fired shots in the air to disperse the crowd.

Following attacks by the police and demolition units, construction equipment started tearing down the family’s house with their belongings still inside. Sadık Dün, Okan Barutçuoğlu and one other resident whose name could not be obtained were battered and detained by the police while protesting the demolition.

Where the detainees have been taken is unknown while the demolition continues under a police blockade.

The No Demolition in Sur platform and HDP MPs arrived in the Alipaşa neighborhood when they heard of the incident. Tensions are still high in the neighborhood and journalists have been removed from the area.
