Police forces attacked the graves of PKK and HPG guerrillas and YPG fighters in Yeniköy Cemetery in Amed’s central Bağlar district. They entered the cemetery with 4 armored vehicles at noon and pushed the families waiting on their children’s graves away. The police blockaded the cemetery for two hours and tore out the gravestones. They broke some framed photographs at the heads of some graves and damaged the trees as the also stepped on the graves and tore out flowers.
Police also gathered the children in the cemetery and offered them money in exchange for breaking the gravestones. The children refused and left.
Witnessing the damage, Şerif Özdemir (83) said he was threatened by the police and removed from the area.
Süreyya Özmaskan said, “What the police are doing is savagery. They killed our children and now they are damaging the graves. These people are inhuman.”
MEYADER Amed branch co-chair Ayşe Dicle said the immoral mind doesn’t even tolerate the graves and expressed that the police were preparing to attack the cemetery with made-up evidence.
Families went into the cemetery, put the gravestones back and prayed after the police left.
