Protest against military bases in Southern Kurdistan

People in Southern Kurdistan protest against the plan for the construction of US and Turkish military bases.

People in Herîr region in Southern Kurdistan’s Hewlêr city took to the streets on Friday in protest at the military bases the US and Turkey intends to build in the region.

The Herûtî tribe, one of the biggest tribes in the region, also joined the protest, stating that they will face financial problems, as they will not be able to do agriculture and husbandry if the bases are built.

Military bases of the Turkish state in Herîr were built by the Baath regime, after the collapse of which the bases went under the control of the US. The military bases in the region are used for intelligence services and many other military purposes.

Turkish warplanes conducting reconnaissance flights over Bradost, Xakurkê, Xinêre and Qandil and helicopters conducting activities in the region are reportedly taking off from these bases.
