Shopkeepers forced to spy in Kapıköy Border Gate

Recent events in Kapıköy border in Van’s Saray district are causing concern for the tradespeople. Shopkeepers who deal in trade along the border gate say that some soldiers are forcing them to spy.

The Kapıköy Border Gate was “opened” 7 times in the last 14 years by the AKP but it has never been operational. Local shopkeepers are allowed a limited quota for trade at the gate where trouble never seems to end. The shopkeepers are fed up with the practices of the commander who started duty a month ago at the outpost at the gate and they demand a solution.

“NO TRADE IF YOU DON’T ACCEPT SPYING”
The commander started last month and met one on one with shopkeepers to say, “I will know everything that goes on around here, you will give me information,” and doesn’t allow the shopkeepers who refused to deal in trade.

“SOLDIERS SMUGGLE CIGARETTES”
A shopkeeper who does trade at the border gate and wishes to remain anonymous said: “The captain demands us to be informants. When we refuse, he doesn’t allow us to continue with trade. That man smuggles cigarettes with some. We can’t do trade because we don’t accept spying. We are expecting a solution to this from the authorities.
