Slain Kurdish villager denied religious service by the state

Turkish officials blocked religious service for a Kurdish civilian who was killed in a drone strike in Hakkari, yesterday.

Mehmet Temel (35) was seriously wounded after a Turkish armed drone attacked a group of villagers in Kaniyares region of Hakkari. Temel died of his wounds at the hospital.

Temel’s family was first denied a transport service for Temel’s body. In Turkey ambulances or special vehicles are used to transfer the dead to the funeral. The hospital and the municipalities in Van refused to provide transport for Temel’s family.

After Temel’s body was taken to Hakkari city center, the governor blocked religious service at the funeral. The Hakkari governor ordered the mosques to remain closed and barred the personnel from giving religious service for Temel.

Temel’s body was taken to the cemetery in Kiran neighborhood. People’s Democratic Party (HPD)MPs Bedia Ozgokce Ertan and Lezgin Botan was among hundreds of people who attended the ceremony.

Temel was laid to rest after religious service by a local elder.
