TAJÊ calls for action against Turkish attacks on Shengal

TAJÊ calls on the Iraqi government to fulfil its responsibilities towards the Yazidi community and to take action against the attacks of the Turkish state.

The Yazidi Free Women's Movement (TAJÊ) sent a letter to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shiya Sudani, CPT, the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU) demanding a halt to Turkey's attacks on Shengal.

In the letter, the ongoing attacks of the Turkish state against the people of Shengal were strongly condemned and the relevant institutions were asked to close the airspace of Shengal to Turkish warplanes.

Reminding the massacre of the Yazidi community in 2014, TAJÊ stated that the Turkish state's attacks targeting civilians pose the danger of genocide again for the Yazidi community.

The letter stated the following: “In these days when we are preparing for the anniversary of the liberation of Shengal, the Turkish state carried out intense bombardments against Shengal on 24-25 October. In 20 attacks with 16 fighter jets and drones, 6 fighters from the Shengal Defence Units (YBŞ) were martyred and 4 people were injured. Again, 2 civilians, 1 woman and 1 child, were wounded. In addition, the house of a citizen, 2 sacred places belonging to the Yazidi community and 2 water tanks belonging to the municipality were directly targeted by the attacks. These attacks by the Turkish state negatively affect our community and do not allow the wounds of the Yazidi community suffered in the genocide of 2014 to be healed. The attacks of the Turkish state against the Yazidi community are against human rights. This attack is also a genocide and a continuation of the 2014 genocide.”

TAJÊ emphasised that Shengal is a part of Iraq and called on the Iraqi government to fulfil its responsibilities towards the Yazidi community and to take action against the attacks of the Turkish state.

“The Yazidi community has been through 74 genocides and should not be sacrificed again to the power and interest wars of states. Finally, as the Yazidi Women's Freedom Movement, TAJÊ, we call on the Iraqi government to fulfil its humanitarian and legal duties and responsibilities towards the Êzidî community and the people of Shengal. The airspace of Shengal should be immediately closed to Turkish warplanes.”
