Middle East expert Niyaz Hemîd spoke to ANF regarding the reconstruction of Shengal. Hemîd remarked that the United Nations (UN) has taken no step for Shengal yet despite leading reconstruction efforts in several areas of Iraq. Hemîd said the UN representatives in Hewlêr acted under the control and in line with the political agenda of Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
“AFTERMATH OF THE FUNDS FOR ÊZIDÎS UNKNOWN”
Recalling that the UN recognized the mass killing of Êzidîs in Shengal as a genocide, Hemîd pointed out that KDP has seized the monetary aid provided by the UN for the rescue of the Êzidîs in ISIS captivity. He continued;
“The United Nations does not deny that what happened in Shengal on 3 August 2014 was a genocide, and that they have a role in this. In a report dated 16 June 2016, the United Nations described the Shengal case as a genocide. The United Nations provided the KDP government with some amount of monetary aid for the rescue of Êzidî women and children that are still in ISIS captivity. However, the aftermath of this aid is unknown, as is the case in other monetary aid received by the KDP.”
“NO PROJECT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR SHENGAL”
Hemîd stressed that the UN should have followed the aftermath of this monetary aid, and said: “The UN has spent a great amount of money for the refugees in Mosul, Shargat, Qayara and other regions in Iraq, and for the reconstruction in these areas so far. Various projects have been developed for the construction of substructure, hospital and education facilities. Still, no investment or project has been put into effect yet for Shengal and its villages that have been liberated a long while ago.”
“KDP DOES NOT WANT THE ÊZIDÎS TO RETURN HOME”
Remarking that the KDP does not want the Êzidîs to turn back to their homes, Hemîd said the following: “Officials from the UN Representation Office in Hewlêr have visited Shengal dozens of times. It seems that the UN officials are in the KDP’s shadow and cannot do anything for Shengal, because of the fact that KDP doesn’t want the Êzidî people to return to their land. The KDP which caused the Êzidîs to be massacred wants now to hold them captive and under its control. By keeping the Êzidîs in camps, KDP subjects them to deplorableness.”
“THE UN SHOULD NOT BE A PARTY TO THIS PLAN”
Hemîd underlined that KDP is acting in accordance with the plans of Turkey’s AKP and seeks to disperse the Êzidîs, and that the UN should avoid being a party to this trick. He added: “On the other hand, KDP seeks to exile and disperse the Êzidîs to Europe and other locations. By doing this, KDP is trying to annihilate the survivors of the genocide. This is a plan of the AKP. The UN shouldn’t be a party to this plan but should rather develop projects that will enable to return of the Êzidîs to their land.”
