Thousands flock to the rally area in Hakkari

Masses are marching in Hakkari in protest at the political coup of the Turkish regime against the municipality won by the DEM Party in the 31 March elections.

Thousands are taking part in the rally under the motto "Municipalities belong to the people, we will not allow usurpation" in protest at the usurpation of Hakkari Municipality on 3 June.

The rally is organised by the Democratic Society Congress (DTK), Peoples' Democratic Congress (HDK), Democratic Regions Party (DBP), Free Women's Movement (TJA), Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), other components of the Labour and Freedom Alliance and civil society organisations. The rally will be held in Tekser neighbourhood.

Thousands of people from Kurdistan and Turkey came to the city by buses early in the morning. While the buses were prevented from entering the city, people came to the rally site on foot. The first stop of the people was DEM Party Provincial Organisation building.

Hundreds of people gathered here and danced for a long time. As the time of the rally approached, the number of participants increased. Thousands of people marched to the area with the slogans "Colemêrg ya me ye" [Hakkari is ours], "Bijî berwxedana Colemêrgê" [Long live the resistance of Hakkari] and "Bijî berxwedana zindanan" [Long live the prison resistance].

The following are attending the rally:

DEM Party co-chairs Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan, DBP Co-Chair Keskin Bayındır, Co-Mayor of Hakkari Municipality, Viyan Tekçe, DEM Party Provincial Co-Chair Kadir Şahin, Halkevleri MYK (Central Executive Board) member Sevinç Hocaoğulları, EMEP MYK member Orhan Kurul, Revolutionary Party MYK member Enes Uğurtekin, Socialist Assemblies Federation (SMF) MYK member Hıdır Yıldız, Social Freedom Party (TÖP) Spokesperson Juliana Gözen, Socialist Solidarity Party (SODAP) Spokesperson and DEM Party MP Kezban Konukçu, KESK (Confederation of Public Employees' Unions) Co-Chair Ayfer Koçak, Labour Movement Party (EHP) Chair Hakan Öztürk, Socialist Re-Foundation Party (SYKP) Co-Chair Feray Mertoğlu, Green Left Party Co-Chair Ahmet Asena and Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) Co-Chair Özlem Gümüştaş.

On the other hand, thousands of people are kept waiting at Depin police search point due to the criminal record check (GBT). Due to this procedure, the Van and Çukurca entrances of the city were completely closed to vehicle traffic. The vehicles allowed to move on after the search are sent back to the petrol area next to the Depin point after dropping off the passengers near Seyir Hill.

Traffic is completely blocked at this point and, according to reports from the ground, it may take hours for citizens to reach the rally site. The negotiations of DEM Party MPs to open the road remained fruitless.
