Thousands gather for Öcalan’s freedom in Amed

Thousands of people flock to the rally held in Amed with the demand for Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan’s freedom.

A rally has been organized in the Station Square in Amed under the lead of the Free Women’s Movement (TJA) and the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HPD) Women’s Assembly with the slogan, “Isolation will lose freedom will prevail”. People started to gather at the four entrances to come into the rally grounds since early morning. At 12.00, when the rally would officially start, the crowds were thoroughly searched and then allowed into the area.

“RESISTANCE AND FREEDOM WILL PREVAIL”

Journalists allowed in through the protocol gate had their IDs checked individually and were made to wait for a while. The women, the youth, the elderly and the children rushed to the square to sing and dance the halay. Many women wear colorful traditional dresses. The crowd frequently chant “Bê Serok jiyan nabe”, “Jin jiyan azadî” and “Political prisoners are our pride”. The rally ground is draped with multicolored HDP flags and banners reading “End Harassment, Rape and Isolation”, “Women Will Be Free With the Sun” and “Women Will Achieve Freedom Through Resistance” were put up.

HDP Co-chair Serpil Kemalbay, TJA activist Ayla Akat Ata, DTK Co-chair Leyla Güven and HDP MPs participate in the rally.

HDP Group Deputy Chairperson Çağlar Demirel’s letter is going to be read and musicians Yasemin Göksu, Hediye Viranşehir and Helime Omerî will perform in the rally. Thousands are gathered in the area and the rally started with a minute’s silence.
