Thousands protest against Turkey’s war at South Kurdistan border

Thousands of people protested at the Turkish-Iraqi state border against the military operation in the guerrilla areas in southern Kurdistan. The peace mothers appealed to ruling KDP’s Massoud Barzani, saying, "Stop the treason. Aren't you ashamed?"

A protest march has taken place in the province of Şırnak against the Turkish military operation in the Medya Defense Zones and the Barzani family's collaboration with the Turkish state. Thousands of people arrived from the surrounding provinces in the border village of Tilqebîn in Silopi district to walk toward the border. The demonstration was led by the Council of Peace Mothers and was attended by numerous politicians from the HDP (Peoples’ Democratic Party) and DBP (Democratic Regions Party), as well as activists from the TJA (Free Women's Movement) and the DTK (Democratic Society Congress). On Kurdish-language banners and with slogans, the attitude of South Kurdistan’s ruling party KDP was denounced as a betrayal and solidarity with the resistance of the guerrillas against Turkish expansionism in Kurdistan was expressed.

"Massoud Barzanî, aren't you ashamed?"

Emine Özek of the Council of Mothers of Peace gave an emotional speech in which she appealed to KDP Chairman Massoud Barzani: "How long will Massoud Barzani support the despots? How far will this betrayal go? We want unity, they want war. Our children are being attacked with tanks and grenades. Why are our children in the mountains? Massoud Barzani, stop this treason. Aren't you ashamed? Stand by your people at last!"

"War against the Kurdish people and the democracy movement in Turkey"

Speaking after, DBP Co-Chair Saliha Aydeniz said, "We are here to protest against a brutal war that has been going on for days. We say no to this war which is based on hostility against the Kurdish people." The Kurdish politician pointed out that even before the ground offensive began in southern Kurdistan on April 17, a comprehensive war policy had been implemented by Turkey's ruling AKP/MHP coalition. She stated that the war served to maintain the Turkish government's power and to implement neo-Ottoman dreams and was directed against democracy in Turkey as well as against the Kurdish people.

"Erdogan is not your friend"

DTK Co-Chair Berdan Öztürk said, "We are making a statement here today on behalf of northern Kurdistan. Both the KDP and the people of southern Kurdistan should hear our voice. The rulers have divided Kurdistan into four pieces, but there is only one Kurdistan. The fascist AKP/MHP government has been intensifying its anti-Kurdish policies for a long time, occupying Kurdistan. This has happened before and is taking place today with the help of the KDP, the government of the Kurdistan Federal Region. It is a mistake that we cannot accept. The KDP claims to represent the Kurdish people. However, you are in a position of guardianship like officials before Tayyip Erdogan. You have become officials of the AKP and MHP. You do not represent the Kurds and you do not protect their dignity. To you, the interests of your family are more important than anything else. The status of southern Kurdistan is not the status of the Barzani family. It is the status of the Kurdish people, the status of Kurdistan. Erdogan is not your friend. A despot in northern Kurdistan cannot be a friend in the south."
