Co-mayor of Mardin's Nusaybin district, Sara Kaya, and DBP Nusaybin district co-chair Zinnet Alğan were taken into custody once again yesterday upon prosecutor's objection to their release after a detention four days ago. Both Kaya and Alğan were remanded in custody and sent to Mardin E Type Prison on charges of “membership to an illegal organization”.
On the other hand, Vice News reporter Jake Hanrahan, cameraman Philip Pendlebury, and their translator, reportedly from Sulaymania, as well as their driver, who had been detained while covering incidents in Sur district of Amed on August 27, were referred to a court yesterday following procedures at police directorate.
While the driver was released, Jake Hanrahan, Philip Pendlebury and their translator were remanded in custody and sent to prison on alleged charges of “committing crime on behalf of an illegal organization despite not being its members”.
The journalists had been detained five days ago after leaving Fatihpaşa neighborhood in Sur district where they covered incidents and interviewed youths carrying out self-defense after declaration of self-rule.
