Welcoming the greetings Öcalan sent to them, the Syrian Patriotic Students’ Union and the Student Council said, “We promise to act in accordance with the new paradigm.”
Following Abdullah Öcalan's February 27 "Call for Peace and Democratic Society", a panel discussion was organized at Kobanê University on May 31. The panel was also attended online by Ömer Öcalan, a member of parliament for the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) in Urfa province and a nephew of the Kurdish leader.
During the panel discussion, university academics, lecturers, students, and staff conveyed their greetings to Abdullah Öcalan. DEM Party MP Ömer Öcalan conveyed these greetings to his uncle during a family visit held at Imralı on the occasion of Eid al-Adha on June 7.
Following the meeting, Ömer Öcalan stated, “Mr. Öcalan sent his special greetings to the teachers, academics, students, and all staff of Kobanê University.”
Accompanied by faculty members, the Syrian Patriotic Students’ Union and the Student Council issued a statement regarding Öcalan’s message to Kobanê University.
Student Arif Ebdo read a statement on behalf of Kobane University students, saying the following:
"After conveying the greetings of Kobanê University to Leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Öcalan wrote a letter to the academics and students at Kobanê University, saying, ‘Mr. Abdullah Öcalan has placed great value and importance on the work of universities in Rojava. He has viewed universities as the foundation and pillar of the construction of the ideas of freedom, equality, and democracy. Against capitalist modernity and bureaucratic and academic repetition, he has assigned a new and modern mission to universities regarding their existence, freedom of thought, and intellectual creation. Based on the concepts and approaches of the new paradigm and perspective, he expressed excitement and pride in the existence of Kobanê University and extended his best wishes for success to the university and its students in their efforts.'
As students of Kobanê University, we are proud of Leader Öcalan's ideas and philosophy. We are excited about the letter we received from Leader Öcalan. We pledge to embrace his letter and act in accordance with the new paradigm. We will do everything in our power for Leader Abdullah Öcalan and our community. Additionally, we have the opportunity to live out Leader Abdullah Öcalan's philosophy and move toward freedom guided by that philosophy."
