Two prisoners executed in Iran

Two prisoners charged with “drug trafficking” have been executed in the Iranian city of Isfahan.

The only information about the executions is the forenames of the executed people; Morteza and Azizullah.

In Iran, crimes such as murder, rape, armed robbery, drug traffic and fornication can be punished with a death sentence. In Iran, death sentences are passed on especially political prisoners who don’t have the right to self-defence. Often the trial lasts a few minutes and often lawyers can not even attend. Some political prisoners were hanged in the past and charges against them were said to be drug-trafficking related.

According to an Amnesty International report, at least 80 people were executed since the beginning of 2010 in Iran. The report shows that at least 388 people were hanged last year. Only between 12 June 2009, when presidential election took place and 5 August and Mahmud Ahmadinejad controversially became president for the second time, 112 people were executed in Iran. According to the report, 346 executions took place in Iran in 2008.
