Prosecutor Serhat Çaylak was a leader of the extreme right Grey Wolves during his university years. After he was appointed to Muş province as a public prosecutor, he continued to hold his far-right political views even while doing his public service.
The far-right prosecutor insults representatives of non-governmental organizations and Kurdish politicians by saying, "We will not allow you to divide this country". Çaylak frequently visits the ruling AKP's Korkut district mayor, Sami Pekbay, in his office and exchanges gifts.
Çaylak was rewarded for his ultraright wing activities during his office in a short time. He was promoted in 2019 by the Supreme Council of Judges and Prosecutors and was deemed "worthy of a privileged promotion".
Çaylak launched dozens of detention and arrest operations against Kurdish politicians and NGO representatives during his office after he was promoted in May 2019. He also displays extreme right symbols related to the Grey Wolves in his office.
Most recently, the ultranationalist prosecutor reopened a file which had been dismissed in 2018, claiming that there was new evidence.
Çaylak launched an operation against Human Rights Association (IHD) Muş Branch Chair Tarık Güneş and dozens of other Kurdish politicians. He had a row with the Kurdish politicians during their statements when they reacted to his unlawful mistreatment against the Kurdish politicians and demanded arrest of them.
The prosecutor prepared an indictment from all the press statements made in Muş between 2013 and 2018. He considered the press release regarding the exposure of the body of Ekin Wan, who lost her life in an armed conflict that broke out in the Varto district of Muş in 2015, as "propaganda for a (terrorist) organization".
After the exposure of Ekin Wan's body, the Muş Governorate launched an investigation against the police officers involved. Çaylak also considered the press releases that were reported as news by ANF as crime.
IHD Muş Branch President Tarık Güneş remained under arrest for two months following the indictment prepared by Çaylak. He was later released and there is no Kurdish politician arrested pending trial.
The second hearing will be held on June 22.
