United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) expresses concern over the use of excessive force by Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) against protestors in Southern Kurdistan.
Recalling the democratic principle of right to peaceful protest UN said that the Southern Kurdistan’s authorities are responsible for ensuring that this right is “respected and protected”.
UNAMI’s statement came after KDP forces attacked and detained protestors during the demonstrations in Duhok and Arbil.
Kurdish public servants protested across the Kurdistan Region against Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) austerity measures and salary delays over four days this week.
Journalists also came under attack from some individuals in plainclothes.
