YJA Star guerrilla buried in Elazığ

The German-born guerrilla fighter Sibel Çelik was martyred in Şırnak in January. Due to a mix-up, her body was initially buried in Van, exhumed on Wednesday and re-buried today.

YJA Star (Free Women's Troops) guerrilla Sibel Çelik (nom de guerre: Tavîn Tekoşîn) fell a martyr in a clash with the Turkish army in the course of a broad military operation in Besta region of Şırnak on 23 January.

The People's Defence Forces (HPG) had reported her death in February and later corrected the report, saying: “Instead of Sibel Çelik, Zozan Öcal (Nûda Arîn) had been wrongly declared as martyred. As a result, the body of Sibel Çelik was buried by Zozan Öcal's family in Van.”

After the HPG pointed out the mistake and apologised on 1 June, Sibel Çelik's relatives came to Van from Germany and applied to the public prosecutor's office to retrieve her body. After a DNA match, the body was exhumed on Wednesday under the supervision of a large police contingent and transferred by the family to Elazığ.

The female guerrilla was laid to rest at the Sinanlar Cemetery in the village of Sugözü at night under police blockade.
