YRK announces the death of HPJ guerrilla Ruken Jiyan from Rojava

Guerrilla fighter Ruken Jiyan, who came from Rojava and fought in the ranks of the East Kurdistan Women's Defense Forces, died in an accident in Eastern Kurdistan.

The Press Office of the East Kurdistan Defense Forces (YRK) announced the death of East Kurdistan Women's Defense Forces (HPJ) guerrilla fighter Ruken Jiyan in an accident in Şaho on 1 July 2022.

Ruken Jiyan's real name was Sena Mayuf. She came from Tirbespiyê in northern Syria and was an Arab. She joined the armed struggle in Qamishlo in 2016.


In an obituary for Ruken Jiyan, the YRK said: "In the mountains of Kurdistan, a relentless struggle has been waged against the occupying enemy for many years. The struggle continues under difficult and harsh conditions in every respect. The mountains have become our living space in this struggle. Now a tragic accident has led to great grief within our Rojhilat forces. We extend our condolences to the family of Şehîd Ruken and our patriotic people and give our word to continue her struggle."

YRK stated Ruken Jiyan was influenced by the Rojava revolution at a young age. The women's revolution in particular aroused her interest and she became involved with the philosophy of Abdullah Öcalan. She then went to the mountains of Kurdistan and, as an "Arab woman, became one of the militants of Abdullah Öcalan, according to the YRK. In 2018, she moved to East Kurdistan where she enthusiastically participated in all the work with great interest. She learnt a lot about the culture and history of Rojhilat, which quickly gave her access to the people. A major concern for her was always the fight against patriarchal ways of thinking. At the same time, she fought against the occupation of Kurdistan and the Middle East with deep ideological conviction and shared her insights with those around her.
