10 injured by rocket strike as Iraq’s parliament convenes to elect new president

Rockets hit Baghdad’s Green Zone, injuring 10 people as deputies are meeting to elect a new president.

Iraq's parliamentary session to elect a new president started on Thursday.

Before the meeting, nine rockets hit the high-security Green Zone, home to government buildings and foreign missions.

Security sources reported that the rocket strike left 10 people injured.

Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) candidate Dr. Berhem Salih and KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party) candidate Latif Rashid are competing for the presidential election.

Sunni Sovereignty Alliance Chair Hamis Hanchar and State of Law Coalition Chair Nuri Maliki will be supporting Latif Rashid. The presidential election is expected to be highly competitive.
