10-year prison sentence sought for Yüksekdağ due to her speeches

10-year prison sentence has been asked for former co-chair of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, Figen Yüksekdağ, who is not taken to court to attend hearings in the lawsuits she is facing.

Hearing of the lawsuit filed against former co-chair and Van deputy of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), Figen Yüksekdağ, was held at Mersin 2nd Heavy Penal Court today.

Yüksekdağ, who did not attend the hearing, is standing trial for the speeches she held at HDP Mersin provincial organisation congress and Newroz event in 2016. She is accused of “spreading propaganda for a terror organisation” and “publicly insulting the Turkish Republic state and government”.

Lawyers for Yüksekdağ reiterated their demand for their client’s personal attendance in the hearing but not via the video conferencing system SEGBİS, but their demand was rejected by the court board.

While the prosecutor demanded 10-year prison sentence for Yüksekdağ, lawyers asked for additional time for defense against the concluding opinion. The hearing was adjourned to a future date.
