13-year-old sentenced to prison for insulting Erdoğan

A 13 years old boy who lives in Istanbul has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in a Facebook post.

The lawsuit against a 13-year-old, who was accused of “insulting Erdoğan”, was filed one year ago and the hearing was held at the Istanbul Juvenile Court No.2. The minor A.Ş. didn’t attend the hearing personally while his lawyer Fatma Hapikoğlu did.

Erdoğan reportedly withdrew his complaint but the court, loyal to the Erdoğan regime, ruled that the crime stands and sentenced the child to 3 years in prison. Then the sentence was increased to 3.5 years because “the crime was committed in a public manner”.

In the end, the sentence was reduced to 21 months as A.Ş. is younger than 15. The court postponed the execution of the sentence, on the condition that A.Ş. doesn’t commit the same crime for one year.

Turkey has turned into a prison for children. According to a statement by the Minister of Justice Abdulhamit Gül, as of October 6, there are 2.671 children in prisons.
