Turkish police have cracked down on a memorial event in Ankara for revolutionary leader Ibrahim Kaypakkaya and the other Martyrs of May. The rally, organized by leftist organizations such as the Peoples' Democratic Congress (HDK), Kaldıraç and Partizan, was set to make a statement in Tekmezar Park in the city's Mamak district. Police forcefully dispersed the crowd. At least fifteen people were taken into custody.
On Tuesday, a public memorial for the Martyrs of May had been attacked by the police in Istanbul. There, too, 15 people were temporarily detained. Yesterday, several raids took place in the metropolis, during which seven Partizan members were taken into custody. Another arrest was reported from the province of Erzincan, where a 68-year-old man was targeted. The Interior Ministry said they were members of an "assassination cell" currently preparing "bloody attacks". Partizan said the ministry was conducting a "deliberate disinformation campaign" to "criminalize leftist and anti-fascist struggles."
Ibrahim Kaypakkaya was one of the leaders of the revolutionary movement in Turkey and founder of TKP-ML. On May 18, 1973, he was tortured to death in Amed (Diyarbakir) prison.
