18 years old prisoner is not getting medical treatment in Meltepe jail

Abdullah Akcay has recently turned 18. He is in Maltepe prison since he was 14 for ordinary crimes. He has leukemia. But he has waited for cure for 9 months. His older sister made an appeal to President Abdullah Gul asking him to grant the release of her brother before it is too late, on medical grounds.

The weekly press meeting to denounce the conditions of Abdullah Akcay was held in Istanbul and, according to DIHA agency, was attended by many human rights and prisoner rights associations. Sister Seher Akcay has begged President Gul: "My brother is dying because there is no possibility to get access to medical treatment in prison. He has a chance to get cured. He needs marrow transplant and mine is suitable. He needs to be released before it gets too late. Do not let him die."

Gulseren Yoleri, chair of the Human Rights Association (IHD) Istanbul Branch, also appealed to President Gul: "We are going to be with Akcay family until Abdullah will be released to get proper medical treatment. Ignoring this young boy’s condition is a different way to kill him. You need to prevent this murder by signing the paper to make him free."
