The DBP commemorated Sheikh Said and his companions on the 100th anniversary of their execution.
In a written statement, the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) paid tribute to Sheikh Said and his friends, who were executed on 29 June 1925, in Sheikh Said (Dağkapı) Square in Amed, emphasizing that their struggle left a lasting mark on the history of Kurdistan.
The statement said: "We remember Sheikh Said and his 47 companions with longing," and added that Sheikh Said’s resistance against the nation-state’s policies of assimilation, denial, and destruction was not only for Kurdistan, but for all peoples and faiths of this region.
The DBP added: "At the heart of their resistance was the desire for a free and equal life. However, the totalitarian and authoritarian Ankara administration responded to this demand with massacres and attacks. As a result, Sheikh Said and his companions were killed. This massacre was the clearest sign of the nation-state paradigm based on the interests of an occupying identity.
Despite the passing of a century, the monopolistic and centralized ideology targeting the Kurdish people’s aspirations for freedom and justice continues to deny this in every way. In the face of this reality, in this ‘Peace and Democratic Society’ process, we hope for an end to the denialist ideology and the establishment of a free society based on the values of equality.
On this basis, we once again reiterate our call for equality and freedom of peoples and faiths, for the entrenchment of human rights and democratic values, and for a democratic republic."
