4 detained as police attack vigil for Öcalan in Mersin

Police attacked the vigil demonstration held in Mersin with the demand for freedom for Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan. Four people including Evrensel reporter Cemil Uğur were battered and detained.

Police attacked the “Freedom Vigil” launched in Ahmet Kaya Park in Çay neighborhood in Mersin’s Akdeniz district for the freedom of Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan.

A banner that read “Let İmralı stand not for isolation but for peace” was put up in the crowded vigil demonstration. Police surrounded the crowd with armored vehicles as they sang songs, and then attacked them with tear gas.

Police were seen targeting people deliberately as they shot tear gas and covered the neighborhood with gas. Evrensel reporter Cemil Uğur, Halil polat and two others whose names could not be determined were battered and detained during the attack.
