67 Swiss deputies call for immediate release of HDP politicians

"We demand Turkey to respect the fundamental freedoms and democratic rights of the people. We want to hear the words "peace" and "dialogue" when talking about the Kurdish people. The HDP is a legal and democratically elected party,"say 67 representatives.

67 elected representatives from 4 different Swiss parties issued a joint statement demanding the freedom of the HDP members detained as a result of political genocide operations last week.

The first signatories of the statement are National Parliament members Stéfanie Prezioso and Balthasar Glättli, State Council members Lisa Mazzone, Marina Carobbio Guscetti and Carlo Sommaruga, who protested the political genocide operations targeting the HDP and demanded that the detainees be released immediately.

The statement, titled "Call for the release of 80 HDP members arbitrarily arrested", the 67 Swiss elected officials said: "On Friday 25 September, some 80 members of the HDP have been detained in 7 cities in Turkey, on the grounds of their participation at the Kobanê demonstrations [in 2014]. They are also accused of "attempting a coup" through social media. This extensive police operation clearly shows the anti-democratic, authoritarian and repressive character of the regime led by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.”

The statement recalled that “among those taken into custody are Kars Municipality co-mayor Ayhan Bilgen, former deputy and director Sırrı Süreyya Önder, former MPs Altan Tan, Emine Ayna, Nazmi Gür, academic Beyza Üstün, Can Memiş, feminist researcher Gülfer Akkaya, writer Alp Altınörs, Günay Kubilay and Dilek Yağ.

We demand Turkey to respect the fundamental freedoms and democratic rights of the people. We want to hear the words "peace" and "dialogue" when talking about the Kurdish people. The HDP is a legal and democratically elected party and it received 11 percent of the vote in the most recent elections.

We demand for the release of those still in custody.”
