The 13 activists taken into custody at a memorial ceremony for the revolutionary leader Ibrahim Kaypakkaya and the other May Martyrs in the Turkish capital Ankara are on hunger strike. According to reports, the detainees went on hunger strike to protest against the continued police detention.
After the detention of the activists on Thursday, security forces searched their homes a day later. Before the maximum police detention period expired, the detention period was extended by four days. Those affected are members of leftist organizations such as the Peoples' Democratic Congress (HDK), Kaldıraç and Partizan. Police had taken violent action against the gathering in a park in the Mamak district. There are no indications as to the reason.
In Istanbul, several members of Partizan had also been detained on Wednesday. The measure was justified by the participation of the activists in a public memorial for Kaypakkaya, which had taken place the previous day.
