Alevis accommodated in house of prayer in Elazığ

After the earthquake in the province of Elazığ last Friday, a lot of help is coming from all over Turkey and Northern Kurdistan. However, many of the aid deliveries do not reach the Alevi population.

Mezopotamya news agency has spoken with Alevi earthquake victims in Elazığ, who are currently housed in the Alevi house of prayer, Cemevi. They complain that although help is coming to Elazığ from all over the country, they received nothing. Many report that the aid is selectively distributed to people "with connections" to the authorities. The main reason for this is that the distribution is carried out by the state’s institutions AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Authority) and the Turkish Red Crescent.

Hasan Özdemir from Elazığ says: "If you know someone from AFAD personally, you will get help. There is nothing else. I have been coming back here again and again for two days and have not received anything yet. They say that first you have to register. The poor get nothing. I want to see that the aid is distributed fairly."

65-year-old Kıymet Geyik tells: "The elderly in particular need help. But we get nothing. Today I only received a bag of oranges, nothing else. We need tents, blankets and food. My house collapsed in the earthquake and I have nowhere to go."

Ganimet Kara who house was damaged in the earthquake, says: "I have contacted an official who said I should register, then I could get help. I enrolled days ago but received nothing. We are sitting on the street. We are still afraid to enter our house. Help is pouring in from all over Turkey to Elazığ, but we get nothing."

Yeter Kızıltaş complains: "The relief supplies that arrive do not reach the people. They are not distributed fairly. I want a heater and blankets. We are staying on the street. We are afraid to go home. Our house could collapse at any moment. We need help immediately."
