Another BDP mayor sentenced to prison

The mayor of Suruc-Diyarbakir, Etem Sahin of BDP (Peace and Democracy Party), has been sentenced to 21 months in prison. Already imprisoned mayor Etem Sahin has been convicted for speaking Kurdish during his election campaign and for violating Article 2911 regarding “Law on Demonstration and Marching.”

Sahin has been in court yesterday for two separate trials. In the first he was charged with making a speech in Kuridsh at an election meeting on 22 July 2007. The judge sentenced him to 6 months in prison for speaking in a different language other than Turkish.

The second trial was about attending a march on 29 November 2007. The judge sentenced him to 15 months imprisonment. Altogether mayor Sahin is now been sentenced to 21 months in prison.
