Among 100 people who were on 14 February taken into custody in Mersin as a result of police attack on the funeral ceremony of HPG (People’s Defense Forces) guerrilla Murat Þakar, 46 people have been released yesterday evening.
On the other hand, around 50 people have been held at Anti-Terror Branch of Police Department since yesterday. Among them are also DIHA reporters Zeynep Kuriþ and Özlem Aðuþ who were at the scene to follow-up the news.
Those who were released after six-hour detention include Akdeniz Municipality Mayor, BDP Mersin Provincial Co-Chair, deputy mayors, city council members and members of BDP Mersin organization.
Speaking to journalists after the releases, Akdeniz Municipality Mayor M. Fazýl Türk said that; "I evaluate the events as a provocation. We are going through a delicate process. This kind of operations and detentions do not solve Turkey’s problems, they on the contrary pour oil on the flames. The police took us into custody with the instruction of the governorship. However, despite everything, we will not give up asking for peace.”
