Asrın Law Office lawyers Ibrahim Bilmez, Raziye Öztürk, Emran Emekçi and Cengiz Yürekli applied to the Bursa Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and the Imralı Penitentiary Directorate to meet with their client Abdullah Öcalan, who is held under heavy isolation conditions in Imralı F Type High Security Prison. Lawyers also applied to both the prosecutor's office and the prison directorate for the other prisoners in Imrali, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş.
The lawyers, who did not receive any response to the applications they made twice a week to meet with Abdullah Öcalan, applied for an "urgent visit" to Bursa Criminal Execution Judge on 22 November 2021. The application was rejected, citing a 6-month ban on lawyers' visits to Abdullah Öcalan on 12 October 2021 and a 3-month ban on family visits on 18 August 2021. However, the lawyers were not informed about the decisions cited as reasons for the ban.
Family visits denied
The family visit ban ended on 18 November 2021. Despite this, no response was given to the families' applications to the Bursa Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. On 28 March, the lawyers once again applied to the Bursa Execution Judge, demanding that all unlawful obstacles to family visits be removed and a family visit be granted. Responding on 29 March, the judge rejected the application. In the reasoning for the refusal, the judge claimed that there was a new disciplinary sanction against Abdullah Öcalan, and therefore the meeting could not be held. The rejection stated: "The request was rejected on the grounds that the Imrali Disciplinary Board Presidency was sentenced to ban of family visits for 3 months as a disciplinary penalty on 3 February 2022."
Lawyer visits denied
Abdullah Öcalan was also given a 6-month ban on visits by lawyers by the Bursa Execution Judge on 12 October 2021. Although the ban ended on 22 April 2022, the lawyers did not receive any response to all their applications. Thereupon, the lawyers applied to Bursa's Execution Judge once again on 29 April. The judge responded to the lawyers' application on the same day and again rejected the request for a visit. The "reason" given this time was a 6-month ban on lawyers' visits imposed by the judge on 13 April. Again, no information was given to the lawyers about the reason for the ban.
Abdullah Öcalan was given the right to speak by phone for the first time on 27 April 2020. He spoke to his brother Mehmet Öcalan on the phone on 25 March 2021, as public concerns grew after some allegations about his health appeared on social media. Mehmet Öcalan said that this phone call only lasted a few minutes.
No visits for 4 years
Rezan Sarıca and Nevroz Uysal, two of Abdullah Öcalan's lawyers, last met with their clients on 2 and 22 May, 12 and 18 June and 7 August 2019, after 8 years. Lawyers have not been allowed to meet with their clients since then.
