Henri Barkey, Professor of International Relations at Lehigh University and a leading expert on Middle East, spoke to Özgür Politika (Free Politics) paper about the ongoing conflict in Turkey.
Expressing his opinion that the operations within the scope of co-called “KCK” operations will solve nothing, Barkey warned that; “Violence will increase if the situation is not remedied. They -referring to government officials- are trying to suppress the people now. Separately, they can weaken the PKK for a short while but it will return more powerfully. Turkey is following a wrong policy.”
Pointing out to the disappointment experienced by the people, Barkey said the followings; “Even two esteemed persons, Professor Büþra Ersanlý and Publisher Ragýp Zarakolu, have been put in jail. The government will not end intimidating all related people. It won’t be for Turkey’s benefit to take Sri Lanka’s harsh military operations against Tamil Rebellion in 2009 as a reference.”
Prof. Barkey remarked that the process of so-called ‘Kurdish Initiative’ was leaded badly by the AKP government and underlined that the government didn’t seek the advice of Kurdish political parties and others while leading this process.
American analyst also argued that there weren’t many differences between secular and religionist Kurds, voters of the religionist parties and the Peace and Democracy Party in other words, in terms of demands for the recognition of their existence and basic rights.
