Barzani: Kurds have the right for self determination

A conference was held on 19 February in Hewler city for the 66th anniversary of Mahabad Republic's establishment.

The conference was attended by President of Federal Kurdistan Regional Government, Massoud Barzani, former head of government, Berhem Salih, BDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaþ, DTK Co-Chairs Ahmet Türk and Aysel Tuðluk, deputies Leyla Zana, Sýrrý Sakýk, Nazmi Gür as well as representatives of political parties and civil society organizations, intellectuals and writers from Turkey and Syria.

Making the opening speech of the conference, Massoud Barzani pointed out that Kurds have faced and suffered from severe miseries and slaughters in the struggle they have given for a long time. Barzani continued as follows; "However, the point reached today has shown that this problem cannot be solved through policies of violence. Like all other peoples, Kurds also have the right for national self-determination. This right should be respected by everyone and the problem should be solved through peaceful ways."

Barzani underlined that the enemies of Kurds have always followed policies of splitting Kurds and making them kill each other. "However, Kurds will not kill or fight against each other anymore", he added.

Barzani's speech was followed by reading the message sent by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani who also stated that the conference was of great importance for Kurds. Talabani expressed his wishes to the Kurdish people to ensure a free and equal living in the Middle East.

Former head of government, Berhem Salih, also put emphasis on national self-determination and remarked that Kurds should live freely with their own identity at four sides of Kurdistan.

The speech on behalf of BDP and DTK was made by BDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaþ who pointed to the importance of the establishment of Mahamad Republic and said that; "By learning lessons from these historical developments and our history, we should form new road maps and continue our struggle. We shouldn't make the same mistakes again."

Demirtaþ stated that the unity of Kurds is a must to stop all slaughter policies followed against Kurds at four sides of Kurdistan and continued as follows; "The lack of a unity among Kurds is the reason why they are exploited. As a political movement of Kurdistan, we serve for the unity and togetherness of the Kurdish people. We are ready to make all kinds of self-sacrifice on the way to make our own decision with a national unity. This is what our people demand from us."

Demirtaþ also evaluated the recent developments in Syria and added; "There is a historical development in southwestern Kurdistan where our people are getting stronger and growing more and more every day. The whole Kurdistan nation, all Kurdish movements and representatives should support our people there and stand by them with the responsibility obliged by the history. The national conference is therefore of major importance for our unity."

Following the conference, the committee of BDP and DTK went to Salahaddin city to have a meeting with Massoud Barzani.
