BDP Co-Chairs visit prisoners on hunger strike

Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Co-Chairs Selahattin Demirtaþ and Gültan Kýþanak and DTK (Democratic Society Congress) Co-Chair Aysel Tuðluk visited jailed deputy Selma Irmak who has announced on 15 February to have begun an indefinite hunger strike to protest against the capture and isolation of Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan.

Speaking to journalists after the visit to Irmak and other BDP member prisoners on hunger strike in Diyarbakýr E-Type Prison, BDP Co-Chair Demirtaþ said that; "Our jailed comrades stage this act to display their reaction against the policy of cruelty and the unlawful and immoral pressure imposed on the Kurdish people. This is a critical act which could have serious consequences".

Demirtaþ pointed out that that the indefinite and non-alternate hunger strike act by political prisoners was staged in protest against the government policies of pressure, isolation, war and slaughter. BDP Co-Chair continued saying the followings; "They are doing this because politicians, even elected deputies, aren't allowed to do democratic politics. On the other hand, the people face pressure and cruelty and they are put in prison under the guise of 'KCK operations'."

Commenting the indefinite hunger strike act by deputies as a scream, Demirtaþ said that "the message of this scream is the fact that we want to solve the problems through politics". BDP Co-Chair also stated that the woman prisoners on hunger strike were subjected to visit ban because of the act they stage and continued as follows; "These people stage this act because of the fact that they have been deprived of their right to do politics. However, they are imposed further punishments when they react to this unlawfulness. On the other hand, the number of prisoners is three times more than its capacity. They face torture inside torture and cruelty inside cruelty. The Minister of justice should realize the disaster in the prison and intervene in the situation in the soonest time before it reaches dangerous dimensions."

Demirtaþ ended adding that they will take the necessary steps to carry the subject to the Parliament.

Deputies of BDP and Labor, Democracy and Freedom Block will go on a two-day hunger strike on 20-21 February. The act of deputies will be staged to support the indefinite and non-alternate hunger strike of arrested MP Selma Irmak who began a hunger strike on 15 February with six other political woman prisoners.

BDP Þýrnak deputy Faysal Sarýyýldýz has also on 16 February announced an indefinite hunger strike to protest against the condition in which Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan is kept. Sarýyýldýz's decision followed that of jailed MP Selma Irmak.
