BDP women: Erdoğan should stop behaving as a guardian of morals

BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) Women Assemblies has released a statement in response to the authoritarian and repressive policies of the ruling AKP (Justice and Development Party) government.

The statement pointed out that the rapidly increasing killing, rape and sexual abuse of women in Turkey are not independent from the policies of the AKP government.

Referring to the recent statements of PM Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who has voiced complaints and concerns over the together living of girls and boys sharing same houses during their university education, women from BDP Women Assemblies remarked that the prime minister's attitude as a guardian of morals, and the enactment of laws in line with his statements, was an anti-democratic practice violating human rights, those of women in particular.

BDP women said life in Turkey has been quite difficult for women, and has become much more difficult since the AKP came to the power.

Quoting PM Erdoğan who grounded his comments on university students on alleged complaints voiced by the people, BDP Women Assemblies said they expected the government to enact laws soon to provide a legal basis for intervention in the houses shared by university students of different genders.

Remarking that the alleged complaints on the subject were not convincing at all, women asked “Now that the government is paying attention to the complaints voiced by the people, then why does it not take into consideration the complaints on women killings, sexual abuse against children and right violations across the country?”.

BDP women underlined that Erdoğan's each statement and comment on women was followed by a violation of their basic rights, and that  they didn't accept the orders of an anti-democratic, gendered and reactionary mindset which -they underlined- incited honor and women killings.

Women called on the AKP government to stop doing politics over the body of women and behaving as a guardian of morals.
