Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejcinovic Buric pledged to use her full powers to ensure human rights standards were respected throughout the Council of Europe region.
In her first address to Parliamentary Assembly, the Secretary General said respect for human rights was non-negotiable, and that she would act to ensure that countries followed through on judgments of the European Court of Human Rights.
Pejcinovic Buric is expected to serve as Secretary General of the Council of Europe for the next 5 years. During the five-year term Buric will bring to the agenda of the different bodies of the Council, issues such as Turkey, Russia and Ukraine which preoccupy members.
HDP delegation to meet Buric this week
Marija Pejcinovic Buric, who followed Norwegian Thorbjorn Jagland in the post, is expected to meet with a HDP delegation at the PACE this week.
