Call to protect Der-Mor Gabriel Church

German Evangelist Church Council and Priests Council released a statement calling German government to show effort to protect Der-Mor Gabriel Church in Mardin.

The Der-mor Gabriel Church enjoys the greatest prestige in the history of Christendom since it is the first Church which was established in Jerusalem out of the Apostles, Preachers and other converted Jews, and was grafted in Antioch by those who were converted from among the Arameans and other gentile elements.

The church is a symbol for Assyrian minority in Kurdistan. The church faces six seperate legal investigations claiming that the site of the church belongs to Turkish government.

The religious organizations called German government to intervene to the process as Mor-Gabriel Church is a vital element to keep the Assyrian minority together.

The Turkish government has virtually left this historical and holy monastery to the mercy of the local ashiret (clan) leaders who also act in the capacity of village guards.

Suleyman Celebi, a member of this ashiret of village guards, is sitting in the parliament as an MP of AKP. It’s said that Celebi is behind this legal process against the church.
