Candidate Kürkcü met artists in Mersin

Mersin Musicians Platform members met Labor, Democracy and Freedom Block’s Mersin Independent MP Candidate Ertugrul Kürkçü to express their support for him in the next 12 June general election.

Days prior to the general election, Labor, Democracy and Freedom Block, is growing and creating more and more hopes getting support from all sections of society. There is a feeling in the city that the Block is going to make a strong performance and possibly sending Ertugrul Kürkçü into parliament. Meeting with Kürkçü were 30 musicians, poets and writers. They told of their joy and excitement at the candidacy and spoke about the problems faced by artists in Mersin.

Remembering the murder of singer Sarp Oztürk in December 2010 for not playing a song he had been "requested" to play, artists said that concern for their safety is one of the main problems musicians face.

It is a danger they face every day, said musicians adding that they are deprived of safety in their work and of a platform to perform their works of art. Musicians asked Kürkçü’s advice about limited possibilities to be heard by the public.

Ertugrul Kürkçü began by saying that "folk songs will win sooner or later". Emphasizing that there is no man speech as strong as folk songs created by the people, Kürkçü promised musicians to make any effort in order to grant the possibilities for the meeting of artists and local governments. Kürkçü added the followings: “And should all these ways fail, there will be no other choice but to stand by people on streets. Believing that a life of free voices and words of freedom is the absolute living space of social liberation, it will be impossible not to put that into practice.” (B.O.)
