CHP MP Berberoğlu faces 25 years in prison

The judges issued an arrest warrant for CHP MP Enis Berberoğlu in the “MİT trucks” case hearing today.

The lawsuit against former journalist and current CHP MP Enis Berberoğlu had been combined with the lawsuit against Cumhuriyet Newspaper Ankara Representative Erdem Gül and former Cumhuriyet Editor in Chief Can Dündar, and the combined case hearing for the “MİT trucks” suit was held in Istanbul 14th High Criminal Court today.

Berberoğlu was convicted for “revealing state information that should have remained confidential for political and military espionage purposes”. The court sentenced Berberoğlu to a life sentence first, but the sentence was reduced to 25 years later. The court also ordered Berberoğlu’s arrest.

CHP had voted “yes”, alongside AKP and MHP, in the vote in May 2016 to lift parliamentary immunities and the amendment passed the parliament with 376 votes. All three parties acted to have the HDP MPs arrested.
