Christmas greeting in Diyarbakýr and Mardin

The Christian people in Diyarbakýr and Mardin have welcomed the Christmas in churches. The ceremony in Diyarbakýr was also joined by Sur Mayor Abdullah Demirbaþ and Muslim religious men.

People prayed and sang hymns at the Virgin Mary Assyrian Orthodox Church in Diyarbakýr and the Kýrklar Kilisesi (Church of the 40 Martyrs) in Mardin.

The ceremony in the Church of Virgin Mary was performed by priest Yusuf Akbulut who sanctified the attendees in company with Syriac and Turkish prayers. Hymns were sung by choirs and a performance was displayed with the theme of birth of Jesus and his being warmed up in the cave where he was found.

Sending Christmas celebration messages to Assyrians in the church, Sur Mayor Abdullah Demirbaþ wished peace, brotherhood and common-living to the region, Turkey and the humanity. Remarking that there is a need for togetherness in the current process, Demirbaþ said that; “With the representatives of all belief groups, we are here today at a special day of a distinctness. Our purpose is to persistently develop the idea of coexistence against all mentalities that have declared us enemy to each other so far. This is what we need in the first place; to restore mentalities. We express that we will continue to insist on living together with all our differences. We want Turkey to be an example of an area of together living.”

And the ceremony in Kýrklar Church was performed by Mardin-Diyarbakýr metropolitan bishop Filüksinos Saliba Özmen and Church Archpriest Gabriel Akyüz. In a Syriac and Turkish speech to mark the meaning and importance of the day, Filüksinos Saliba Özmen said that; “There is a need for a unity and togetherness in the country today. As expressed by Jesus, today is the day of unity, brotherhood, love and respect. We need to ensure a tight-knit.”
