Clashes in İzmir
Thousands have taken to the streets in the western province of İzmir on Sunday to display solidarity with the Gezi Park resistance in Istanbul's Taksim Square. Clashes broke out between police and protestors as they gathered in the Kordon area in Alsancak. Police is again using intense tear gas against protestors, just like what they have been doing for the last five days in many areas witnessing mass demonstrations in solidarity with the Taksim resistance. Clashes are spreading towards Kıbrıs Şehitleri Street.
Constituents of İzmir HDK (People's Democratic Congress) have also been surrounded by riot police and hundreds of plain cloth police officers carrying sticks, reportedly getting ready for attacking the mass.
197 protestors, including some 30 minors, have reportedly been taken into custody in clashes lasting from last night till early morning.
Detainees are being held at the İzmir police directorate, including children who must be held at the juvenile unit.
