Cologne pays tribute to Nurcan Bakır

Bakır was caught wounded, and she was tortured. But she never spoke during the interrogation. She then went on a death fast.

Nurcan Bakır (Zelal), who was martyred in the action she carried out in Burhaniye prison, in Balıkesir, was commemorated at the DKTM in Cologne.

The commemoration was held at the Democratic Kurdish Community Center in Cologne and began with a minute's silence for the martyrs of the Kurdish struggle for freedom.

A video about Bakır's life was shown and then her cousin Zahide Yetisen addressed the crowd.

"Nurcan had a great influence on us. After she joined [the guerrilla ranks], eight of her cousins joined the guerrilla. I also stayed in prison between 1994-2003. I stayed with Nurcan in prison for one year in Sivas."

Adding that Bakır has always been an exemplary revolutionary, Yetişen added: "She was caught wounded, and she was tortured. But she never spoke during the interrogation."

Yetişen continued: "There are many hidden or unwritten stories in our struggle. One of these stories is Nurcan's and her life. She longed for her country. She wanted to stay in the country, even if it was in prison. I feel that her soul was relieved when she was buried in the village. On the same day, four of our friends fell martyrs in Shengal. I remember those martyrs with respect. We owe them to struggle."

Nurcan Bakır had joined the latest death fast.
