The Constitutional Court accepted Tuesday an appeal by the main opposition party, CHP (Republican's People Party) agreeing to assess whether proper procedures were followed in passing a set of government-backed reforms through Parliament.
The Republican People’s Party, or CHP, had applied to the country’s top court seeking the annulment of the constitutional amendments, which were passed by Parliament and approved by President Abdullah Gül in early May.
The examination of the reform will be only on procedural an methodological grounds.
Following President Gül’s approval of the package, the CHP filed a petition with the Constitutional Court on May 15 to annul the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP’s, constitutional reforms. The CHP applied to the court with the support of 111 deputies.
The court will make its final decision at a later date to be determined by the court’s president, Haþim Kýlýç.
