CPT officials in Turkey, meeting with Öcalan uncertain

CPT officials arrived in Turkey to inspect prison conditions after the declaration of the state of emergency in the aftermath of the coup attempt. It is not certain whether CPT officials will visit İmralı Prison.

European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) officials have arrived in Turkey to inspect prison conditions and the claims of torture and human rights violations after the declaration of the state of emergency in the aftermath of the coup attempt.

Öcalan’s lawyer Özgür Erol had met with officials from the CPT, which has long been silent on the intensified isolation of the PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in İmralı Island, in Strasbourg on August 22. Lawyer Erol had informed the officials about the news from İmralı that emerged after the coup attempt on July 15 and the new conditions of the prison.

In the meeting on August 22, Erol informed CPT officials about the news that emerged after July 15 and the arrest of Bursa Regiment Commander and three high-ranking officials on İmralı Island for their involvement in the coup attempt. Erol had also requested the officials to send a committee to İmralı for the inspection of the prison, and brought up the ban on lawyer and family visits, the monitoring and recording of meetings with lawyers, and the bans of phone calls and communication.

The CPT committee is expected to visit several prisons but it is not yet certain if it will visit İmralı Prison.
