DBP holds 5th extraordinary congress, re-elects Saliha Aydeniz and Keskin Bayındır as co-chairs

Kurdish politicians Saliha Aydeniz and Keskin Bayındır have been re-elected as the co-chairs of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) at an extraordinary congress in Ankara.

The Democratic Regions Party (DBP) has re-elected Saliha Aydeniz and Keskin Bayındır as co-chairs at an extraordinary congress in Ankara. The two Kurdish politicians had previously served as the co-chairs of the DBP but entered the Turkish parliament in May as MPs on the list of the Green Left Party.

DBP and the Green Left Party are sister parties of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), against which a closure case is underway. While the HDP and the Green Left Party see themselves as parties of the whole of Turkey, the DBP focuses on the Kurdish provinces. The DBP was formed in July 2014 by renaming the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP). Its declared aim is to represent the interests of the Kurdish population and to decentralise Turkey.

Saliha Aydeniz, born in 1973 in Ergani in the province of Amed, is a trained nurse and activist of the Free Women's Movement (TJA). She was elected to parliament in 2018 as a deputy for the HDP. In December 2019, she switched to the DBP and became its co-chair.

Keskin Bayındır was born in 1984 in Sason in Batman province, studied teaching and was active in trade union work for many years. In 2016, he was suspended from his teaching position by decree. In December 2022, he was arrested as an alleged member of an armed terrorist organisation, but was released on the first day of the trial in March.

Criminal proceedings are still pending against the two politicians.
