Delegation of hunger strikers meet with the Executive Secretary of CPT

A delegation from hunger strikers in Strasbourg has met with the Executive Secretary of Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT), Jeroen Schokkenbroek.

The indefinite-irreversible hunger strike started by Shengal Diaspora Assembly with the demands Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan be visited urgently and Shengal’s status be recognized internationally continues on its 7th day.

A delegation from hunger strikers has met with the Executive Secretary of Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT), Jeroen Schokkenbroek. The delegation was made up of Peşimam Ekrem Deniz, Fikret İgrek and Sezai Uçar.

While the delegation explained the reasons and demands of the hunger strike, Schokkenbroek stated that they follow the developments regarding the situation of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan closely, but refusing to announce an exact date for a visit to İmralı Island Prison where he is held.

Schokkenbroek noted that they are currently working on a report undersigned by 47 states, saying that this report will be finalized soon and they as CPT will highlight a series of demands on this matter.

Schokkenbroek stated that they are also monitoring the public sensitiveness and awareness on Öcalan in the wake of the July 15 coup attempt, adding; "As a requirement of our institutional position, we will continue displaying sensitivity as we do on many other countries."

The delegation of hunger strikers once again highlighted the urgency regarding the denial of communication with Öcalan, and recalled the developments following the coup attempt, including the arrest of military officials on İmralı Island where Öcalan is held in aggravated isolation.

The delegation underlined that they will continue their protest until Öcalan is accessed.
