Demirtas: This is the real face of this government

“We are of the opinion that the army was instructed by the government for the operation", BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) co-chair Selahattin Demirtas used a strong worded statement to describe the current situation. "The AKP government - he added - is trying to get votes by killing as many PKK members as possible. The government is carrying out a dangerous work, it is playing with fire. They are not interested in the deaths and clashes in this region. As you saw, they showed the biggest reaction against the death of two police officers in Kastamonu. Two police officers died in Silopi last week but the Prime Minister doesn’t care. The government hasn’t taken any step further since the August of 2008.”

Demirtas then added that “You can see the emotionality and anger of the people here on their faces. You won’t feel this in the west part of the country but here there is a mourning atmosphere that you can feel at any time on streets. The relatives of people are dying; their bodies are already being brought here…"

Speaking about the consequences of the ongoing military operations, Demirtas said that "We received the news while entering into the election atmosphere. We can’t make electoral works while the people are so dispirited. Do you know that 42 people died in the last two months including police officers, village-guards and soldiers? ...This is what Aysel Tugluk meant while saying that bad things would happen. They thought we were threatening them. We are of the opinion that the AKP is trying to raise its nationalist votes through these operations."

According to Demirtas, "What we see now are his real thoughts. Please note that Turkish nationalism bases itself on an Islamic ground. They have been standing on a more liberal floor that it has hidden for years due to reasons such as the support of the U.S. however, after the referendum, it turned back to its own ground. It is more careless about workers, intellectuals and students".

Demirtas ended by saying that "the Kurdish problem could be solved if there were a doughtier prime minister. Not even a step has been taken forward since August, 2008, before the opening of the TRT Þeþ channel which is not a blessing for Kurds.”
