Demirtaþ: ‘Freedom for Öcalan’ headline for permanent peace

Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Co-chair Selahattin Demirtaþ gave an interview to DIHA about the ongoing rejection by the court to requests by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan to meet his family and lawyers. The request has been motivated with “bad weather” and "broken boats". Remarking that the policy of deadlock followed by the government targeted Öcalan himself, Demirtaþ called on Kurdish people to show resistance and action against the regime imposed on Öcalan.

Peace will come with Öcalan’s freedom, said BDP Co-chair and remarked that “The AKP is strengthening the isolation policy as well as hitting out at all spheres of Kurdish society launching new military and political operations. Despite these attacks, our people keep reacting and resisting against isolation and operations.”

Commenting on the 13 years long isolation policy in Ýmralý prison, Demirtaþ underlined that; “A special island, a special prison on this island and a special room in this prison were organized for the purpose of isolation alone. Besides the physical isolation Mr. Öcalan is subjected to, the government has also practiced a political isolation since 1999 with the aim to break Öcalan's relation with the people. Rejecting this isolation policy, our people have been carrying on an ongoing struggle for the last 13 years.”

BDP Co-chair remarked that the AKP isolation policy has reached its high and continued as follows; “In the present situation, it is essential to expose the isolation policy and other similar dirty policies imposed on Mr. Öcalan. At this point, it is an obligation to expose these policies giving them a name and to organized a struggle against them.”

Noting that Öcalan’s lawyers had been arrested unlawfully, Demirtaþ pointed out to the necessity for human rights organizations, intellectuals and all segments of society to react against these policies. A duty for all those who side with true peace.

Demirtaþ continued as follows; “The strongest power to break the isolation is the civil resistance. In this respect, we consider the ‘Freedom for Öcalan, end to political genocide’ campaign organized by the women’s movement very important. All our people should take to the streets and chant this slogan to voice their fair demand for the freedom of Mr. Öcalan. This demand now has the same meaning as demanding peace and a permanent real democracy in Turkey. Those who side with peace, freedom and democracy should now adopt and support this campaign.”

Demirtaþ noted that the government wanted to prevent the demand for Öcalan’s freedom to be voiced. Some media and judiciary also act putting pressure on people. ‘Freedom for Öcalan’, said the BDP co-chair should be the headline under which the request to and end of arrests and military operations as well we demanding a permanent peace to the Kurdish issue is voiced.

Demirtaþ ended commenting on the Human Rights Association’s (IHD) application to the CPT (Committee for the Prevention of Torture) as significant in terms of having a legal struggle against isolation in the international arena and making a major contribution to peace.
